Officially the Republic of Madagascar, this country was previously known as the Malagasy Republic. It is an island country situated in the Indian Ocean, off the south-eastern coast of Africa. The capital of Madagascar is Antananarivo (City of a Thousand), also known as Tana. As the fourth-largest island in the world, Madagascar is comprised of the main island and many smaller islands. This bio-diverse country offers wildlife that isn’t found anywhere else on the planet.

Madagascar’s economy is based on tourism, agriculture, and mining. With over 90% of the animals being unique to the island, the eco-tourism market is huge. Agriculture includes raffia, fishing, and forestry, as well as spices such as vanilla, cloves, and ylang-ylang. Other key agricultural resources include coffee, lychees, and shrimp. Key mineral resources include precious and semi-precious stones. Madagascar provides nearly half of the world’s supply of sapphires. Large mining projects in the country include Rio Tinto’s ilmenite and zircon projects near Tôlanaro, and the Sherrit International extraction of nickel near Moramanga. Madagascar’s cuisine typically consists of rice served with a dressing of sauces, meat, vegetables, and spicy seasonings. They enjoy spicy, hot food and many dishes are garnished with fiery peppers. Historically known as the Vanilla Island, many desserts are flavoured with vanilla. Country specialities include Ro - beef and pork marinated in vinegar, water and oil, Ravitoto - meat and leaves combined and cooked together, and Ramazava - leaves and pieces of beef and pork browned in oil.

Transport Information

Ivato Airport (TNR) is Antananarivo’s major airport. This serves as the main entry point for the country. It is serviced by Air France, Air Austral, Air Mauritius, Interair South Africa, and Air Madagascar. Travelling by bus or taxi is the easiest way to travel around Madagascar. You can get anywhere on the island using the extensive minibus network. A limited number of large buses are used to serve the longer, night routes, which include a service between Antananarivo and Tamatave. Taxis also provide reliable transportation across the island and you can walk to many locations once you are in town. There is one train service on the island running between Fianarantsoa and Manakara.
