Officially the Republic of Rwanda, this country is situated in central and east Africa. The capital and largest city of Rwanda is Kigali. Just south of the Equator, Rwanda is bordered by Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The country offers savannah, mountains, many lakes, and a subtropical climate.

Business Information

The economy of Rwanda is mostly based on local farmers doing subsistence agriculture. Products include coffee, tea, pyrethrum, bananas, beans, sorghum, and potatoes. The major exports are coffee and tea. Manufactured products include cement, small-scale beverages, soap, furniture, shoes, plastic goods, textiles, and cigarettes. Rwanda’s mining industry consists of cassiterite, wolframite, gold, and coltan. Coltan is used in electronic and communication devices such as mobile phones. There are many locations in the country for offices to let.

Entertainment And Dining Out

Places to visit in Rwanda include A’Kagera National Park. This wildlife preserve offers 2,500 sq km (1,000 sq miles) of savannah, situated west of the A’ Kagera River. There are safaris to see lions, zebras, antelopes, hippos, buffalos, leopards, apes, impalas, crested herons, fish eagles, cormorants, giraffes, elephants, elands, warthogs, and over 500 species of birds. Another place to visit is Butare. Home to Rwanda’s national university, it serves as the country’s intellectual capital. Here you will find the National Museum, craft shops, and a botanical garden. Rwanda offers a selection of international cuisine in area hotels. Local specialities include brochettes – a meat or fish kabob served with rice or chips, Tilapia is a white fish found fresh and farmed locally, Matoke is cooked plantain.

Transport Information

The Kigali International airport (Airport Code: KGL) is situated 12 km (7.5 miles) east of the capital city. It takes about 25 minutes to commute from the airport to the city centre by bus or taxi service. While Rwanda currently has no rail network, the country has a good road system and a network of minibuses provide links between the country’s major towns and cities. Privately run minibuses, including Okapi Car, Trans Express 2000 and Atraco Express, are the most reliable and run serve Kigali, Butare, Gisenyi and Kibuye amongst other cities. Taxis are available, but are mainly only used in Kigali.
