Shadwell Area Guide

Located in the Borough of Tower Hamlets, Shadwell is part of London’s historical East End and lies just a few miles from Charing Cross. The area boasts a rich history, although it used to be nothing more than marshland. However, in the 17th Century Shadwell was developed into a waterfront hamlet and has continued to grow ever since. Shadwell enjoys a convenient location on the north bank of the River Thames, close to a range of attractions and places of interest. If you are an art lover, it is well worth paying a visit to the nearby Wapping Project or venturing a little further afield for the delights of the Whitechapel Gallery. Captain James Cook used to be a parishioner at the Parish Church and it is where one of Thomas Jefferson’s grandfathers was married. Thomas Jefferson’s mother, Jane, was a former resident of Shadwell.
