Tower Hamlets is a London borough that covers much of what has traditionally been recognised as the East End of the city. The borough incorporates the Isle of Dogs and Canary Wharf to the south, Victoria Park to the north-east and Spitalfields to the west. The City of London lies immediately to the west of Tower Hamlets and parts of the London Olympic Park are also within the borough. Tower Hamlets is primarily a residential area, with tens of thousands of people calling the borough home. However, there are also dozens of businesses based in the district and some much-loved locations for shopping and eating out, such as Brick Lane, Spitalfields and Columbia Road Market.

Setting up your business here

The entire of Tower Hamlets is well placed in terms of offering great business locations. The financial hub of Canary Wharf forms part of the borough itself, while the City, Bank, Monument and St Paul’s are all within very easy reach by Tube, taxi, bus or on foot. There are a number of major road routes running through Tower Hamlets, principally Whitechapel Road and Commercial Road. The area is comprised of a large collection of thriving local districts, each distinct and unique in their own way. Companies based in Tower Hamlets include MJP Architects, News International and financial services giants such as HSBC, Barclays and Citigroup, with the latter trio all having established very significant office holdings at Canary Wharf.

Things to do in Tower Hamlets

Tower Hamlets has a number of unique urban areas, such as Brick Lane, Wapping and Spitalfields, that have all been reinvented over the years to make for consistently great places to visit. Eastern parts of London and areas in Tower Hamlets are now among the most exciting, energetic and interesting places to be found anywhere in the UK. For excellent places to eat out in Tower Hamlets, try the Galvin Brothers in Spitalfields, Plateau in Canary Wharf, or Barcelona Tapas in Aldgate. For somewhere a little different to grab a drink, try Ten Bells on Commercial Street, Loungelover on Bethnal Green Road or the Prospect of Whitby in Wapping. Other unique local attractions include the walking tours of the East End that take in the precise locations at which the infamous serial murderer Jack the Ripper is believed to have slayed his victims back in 1888. Or for something a little more laidback, you could always spend an afternoon by the River Thames near St Katherine’s Docks or in the spacious but buzzing Victoria Park.
