Bulgaria is a country located in southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the north, Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south and the Black Sea to the east. Bulgaria is a member of the European Union. Bulgaria is Europe’s 14th-largest country. Its location has made it a historical crossroad for various civilizations and it is the home of some of the earliest metalwork and religious artifacts in the world. Bulgaria boasts pristine beaches, lovely churches, and a large selection of winter sport activities.

Business Information

Iron, copper, coal, and lead deposits play a part in Bulgaria’s economic success. Major industries are centered on the extraction, processing and production of metals and minerals. The mining sector is a large employer in the country, and includes companies such as Asarel Medet - copper extraction and processing and Cumerio Med - copper smelting. Surrounding these industrial giants you will find a large selection of office space. Oil, gas, and energy production are also important to Bulgaria’s economy.

Entertainment And Dining Out

Bulgaria tourism offers the unique “100 tourist sites of Bulgaria” promotion. This is a national movement that covers many of Bulgaria’s more popular places to visit. The promotion offers a reward (gold, silver, and bronze medals) for collecting stamps from the suggested sites. This is done to encourage tourists to travel and sightsee throughout the country. Bulgarian cuisine has some unique elements. The relatively warm climate and diverse geography produce excellent growth conditions for a variety of vegetables, herbs and fruits. Because of this, Bulgaria is particularly famous for its rich salads that are required at every meal. Bulgarian cuisine also focuses on quality dairy products, and the variety of wines and local alcoholic drinks such as rakia, mastika, and menta. The most popular Bulgarian salad is the shopska salad. This is a mix of tomatoes, cucumbers, onion, raw or roasted peppers, and sirene. Traditionally this salad is dressed only with salt, sunflower or olive oil, and vinaigrette.

Transport Information

There are four international airports in Bulgaria: Sofia, Varna, Bourgas, and Plovdiv. International trains provide a large selection of routes to Bulgaria, notably through Sofia and Varna. If you want to reach Bulgaria from Western Europe by car, you can either take a ferry from Italy to Greece, or pass through Serbia or Romania. Buses to and from Sofia are available to most major cities in Europe.
