It lies on the Oker River, forty miles (65 km) southeast of Hannover. The Burgplatz (Castle Square) is made up of a group of buildings with historical and cultural significance. Some of these are the Cathedral St Blasius, built at the end of the 12th century, the Burg Dankwarderode a 19th-century reconstruction of the old castle of Henry the Lion, and the Neo-Gothic Town Hall which was built in 1893–1900. There is also a selection of picturesque half-timbered houses, such as the Gildehaus (Guild House). In square’s centre is a copy of the Burglöwe, a Romanesque statue of a Lion, cast in bronze in 1166. The original statue can be seen in the museum of Dankwarderode Castle.
