The Kingdom of the Netherlands is located in North-West Europe, but incorporates some islands in the Caribbean. Mainland Netherlands borders the North Sea, Belgium, and Germany. It shares maritime borders with Belgium, Germany, and the United Kingdom. This country is a parliamentary democracy, with the country capital in Amsterdam and government headquarters in The Hague. The Netherlands is often referred to as Holland, however North and South Holland are actually only two of its twelve provinces.

The Netherlands has a developed economy with important major industries including chemicals, metallurgy, machinery, electrical goods, and tourism. Entertainment And Dining Out

One of the must sees in the Netherlands if you like art is The Van Gogh Museum. It houses the collection of Vincent’s younger brother Theo. But also contains 200 paintings and 500 drawings by Vincent and several of his contemporaries, including Gauguin, Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Bernard. The Netherlands is not known for its cuisine. The meals generally consist of meat, potatoes, with some type of vegetable on the side. The Dutch are known for their specialties and delicious treats: that include Dutch cheese, such as Gouda, Edam, Leerdammer, Maaslander and Maasdam. Dutch or Belgian Chocolate is also considered to be some of the finest in the world. In the Netherlands you will often find raw herring (haring), which is actually cured in salt, available from herring stands and in fine dining restaurants. It is typically served with chopped onion and is sometimes served on a bun to make broodje haring.

Transport Information

The Schiphol Airport is located near Amsterdam; this is a European hub, and one of the largest in Europe. It is the biggest international airport in the country. From Schiphol there are excellent railway connections to cities, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, and others. The train station at Schiphol is located underground, under the main airport hall. Other international airports in the country of Netherlands are Eindhoven Airport, Maastricht/Aachen Airport, Rotterdam - The HagueAirport, and Groningen-Eelde Airport. High speed trains are one of the most comfortable ways to travel between major European cities. You can walk around a bit, get something to eat or drink from the onboard restaurant, and see the sights from the window. There are three ferry services from the UK to the Netherlands.
