Located 39 miles from Geneva, the Swiss city of Lausanne is situated beside Lake Geneva with the Jura Mountains to the northwest. The city is in the part of Switzerland that primarily speaks French. Lausanne is the capitol of the canton of Vaud, and the primary city in the Lausanne district. Lausanne offers beautiful vistas of mountains, lakes and the rolling hills of vineyards.

The importance of sports is very evident in Lausanne. This is a great place to participate in water sports, cycling, mountaineering, and running. Lausanne is host to important running and cycling events such as the track and field event known as Athletissima, the Tour de Romandie cycling competition, marathons and triathlons. In the city of the IOC you want to be sure and visit the Musee Olympique where you will find the story of the Olympics from its inception to current events. For a touch of history visit the medieval Tour de L’Ale which is part of the walls that surrounded early Lausanne in the 1300’s. If you wish to dine on classic Swiss cuisine, you cannot do better than Le Vaudois which serves entrees such as the emince de veau a la zurichoise, which is veal in a creamy sauce with mushrooms. For simple Swiss specialties visit the Café du Vieil Ouchy, where you will find fondue and meringues.

Transport Information

The city of Lausanne is served by the Lausanne Airport which is in nearby Blécherette. Visitors can also come in through the Geneva International Airport which has direct trains running to Lausanne four times an hour. There is no problem getting around Lausanne as the city has a wide ranging public transportation system including a rapid transit metro system with 28 stations. This is reportedly the smallest urban area to have rapid transit.
